4th Grade- Coil Bowls

4th graders created coil bowl. I like to call these brain bowl because the outside of the bowl as raised edges and spiraling lines much like how a brain looks.
We started by creating coils- about 10 each. It didn't matter the length- if one broke they kept it.
Each student then received a glass bowl lined with plastic wrap (this allows the clay to be removed from the bowl without sticking). Students placed the coils inside the bowl. They could do different patterns such as spirals, zigzag, or even parallel lines. Once the bowl was filled with coils, we put little clay balls in the openings to "plug up" and spot where liquid might leak through. Lastly, we smoothed out the inside of the bowl by smearing the coils.
I allowed the clay to dry for a few hours before removing it from the glass bowl and added students names to the bottom using a needle tool.
Students then glazed their bowls the rolling class.

1st Grade- Leaf Prints

1st graders studied printmaking by creating leaf prints. For this project we had different stations in the art room... The stations had similar leaves and one paint color. Students would stay at that table for 2 two minutes before rotating to the next station. They enjoyed getting up, moving around the room, and using the various paint colors and leaves.

1st Grade-Found Object Houses

1st grade students learned about found object art- art in which that artist uses something found in everyday life and incorporates it into their artwork by altering it.
We took envelopes and created houses of out them. I love how the students used their imaginagtion, some became gingerbread houses and others were houses on stilts. :)

2nd Grade- leaf Plates

This project focuses on nature and texture. We actually use a real leaf and press it on clay to create the shape, texture, and size of the leaf. We then glazed our leaves the following class period.

Kindergarten- Winter landscapes

Kindergarteners learn about landscapes by creating this winter scene. They love creating the pine trees. Their eyes light up from the accomplishment of cutting a "cool tree".

Kindergarten- Origami Dogs

I love this project and the kindergartens do too. We learn about origami and then create our own dog. It's so cute to see the names students pick for their dogs.

3rd Grade- Realistic Drawings

3rd grade practiced drawing from observation. We used twigs, leaves, and small plants to draw these realistic images. Lastly, we printed real leaves onto our paper using gold paint.
