2nd Grade Cuckoo Clock

2nd grade created cuckoo clocks by using mixed media. On day one we drew the face of the clock and decorated our background paper by using stamping- a printmaking technique. On day two, we wove together paper to create the actual clock and added the top triangle shape and a fancy shape to the bottom. On  the third day, we created the door, the bird, and glued the clock face on. And there you have it!

3rd Grade Woven Pouches

This is a favorite lesson for almost all the students. Students created woven pouches with the help of a cardboard loom. We wove around the loom for the pouch and wove on the front side only for the flap that hangs down. Students then braided or simply added strings for the strap. This lesson takes about 4 class periods.

Kidergarten- Fish Weavings

I love fibers and weaving and this year I tried weaving with Kindergarten. This was a little challenging so this project might work best for 1st grade in the future.

Day 1- Students picked the color of their fish body. We drew a circle/oval as large and possible and cut it out. We drew a "c" shape on one side and added the eye and mouth. Next, we drew 4 wavy lines coming from the face towards the back of the oval. We used construction paper crayons and put different lines/decorations in each section of the fish. Lastly, we folded our fish like a taco and cut 4 slices in it starting at the fold for us to weave paper in it next class.

Day 2- Students picked out pieces of pre-cut paper strips to weave in their fish. We talked about  going over-under on the first strip and under-over on the second. I asked for students to try their best and once they decided they could do as much as possible, they went to the carpet. I then played this weaving movie. While students watched it, I went around and fix some of their projects. They then went back to their seats and glued under all the "flaps" in order to keep the wefts in place. We then trimmed down the wefts to be even with the fish body. Next, they picked out paper for the fins and tail. We cut a large triangle for the tail and an arch, which is then cut in half, for the top and bottom fin. We glued these on. Lastly, we decorated our fish more using scraps and construction paper crayons.

4th Grade- Spiral Weavings

I just love weaving projects and students do too. We created spiral weaving using cardboard. To set up our weaving we used a template created by another art teacher in my district (she is amazing). Students used the template to determine where to put notches with scissors in their project. Next, students chose a long piece of string to be the weft color. Finally our weaving was set up. Students then started weaving in a spiral pattern. I found myself constantly reminding my students to go over, under, over, under. The weaving aspect took about 3 classes. On the 4th class, students could continue weaving or they could use markers to decorate their edges.

3rd Grade- Warm and Cool Weavings

Day 1- In class we focused on warm and cool colors. We took a 12 X 18 inch paper and folded it in half. Students were then instructed to paint one side warm and the other side cool colors. They could paint any design they wanted because it is going to be cut up later.

Day 2- Cut the paper into half. Took the cool color side and folded it in half hamburger style and cut slits in it (like you are creating a lantern). We then took the warm color side and cut strips the short way. We used the warm color strips to weave over and under through the cool color paper.
