3rd Grade- Snow Measurers

These were perfect for the amount of snow we received just before making the project. One side looks like a snowman while the other acts like a ruler to measure the snow. These are make out of foam board.

3rd Grade- Greek and Roman Inspired Architecture

This is one of my favorite projects.

Day 1- We discuss characteristics of Greek and Roman architecture such as post and beam, arches, columns, and domes. Students use these elements to draw their own building on a 9 x 12 inch paper. After they finish with pencil, they trace over with Sharpie.

Day 2- We color a piece of 9 x 12 inch light paper with chalk pastels. We then cut out the building and glued it on the middle of our chalk pastel paper.

3rd Grade- Snowflakes

This was a one day project to make decorations for our winter choir performance.

Students received 3 different size squares and cut them into snowflakes. They then glued the snowflakes to a cool color paper. Students added a different colored paper to the top and bottom of their project. Lastly, they put glue and glitter on their project.

3rd Grade- Bird's Eye View Landscape

4 Day project

Day 1- We read the book The Man Who Walked Between the Two Towers. We then practiced drawing a birds eye view drawing on computer paper.

Day 2- Students started drawing their own birds eye cityscape on a 18 x 24 inch white paper. Once they finished with pencil they traced over their lines in sharpie.

Day 3- Students colored the buildings, cars, and other small details using crayon.

Day 4- Students painted the ground, water, and sky.

2nd Grade- Tint and Shade Landscape

This was a two day lesson

Day One- We discussed tints- a color and white mixed together and how there are different values of tints.
We then painted our paper using tints. We started with white and added more hue as we painted down our page.

Day Two- We discussed shades- a color and black mixed together. We then painted the trees using shades. After the trees were painted we splatter painted the snow.

1st Grade- Bouncy Snowmen

With all of the snow we received in early January, some of my classes got ahead of others. This was a filler lesson. It took one class and the kids loved it.

After tracing two circles, we folded the bigger one in half and cut slits on the folded edge and the open edge. You want the slits to stagger each other yet cross paths (kind of like a zipper) this allows the paper to stretch or in this case "bounce"

Students then glued the two circles together and added details using markers, crayons, and scrap paper.

Kindergarten- Snow Houses

We created a snow village scene by cutting 3 inch squares and white paint. We glued squares down directly for the house shapes. We cut the squares in half vertically for the roofs. We cut the squares into little squares and rectangles for the doors and windows. Finally, we folded the squares in half and cut the squares to create pine trees. After gluing everything, we added white tempera paint to create snow.

Kindergarten- Owl Moon

After reading the book Owl Moon, kindergarten created snowy landscapes.

We drew the background trees using construction paper crayons. Secondly, we added the snowy ground using torn paper. Then we added the pine trees by folding paper in half and cutting. Lastly, students added details such as snow and moons using crayons.

1st Grade- Envelope Houses

After reading Beautiful Oops, we discussed how you can take an accident or something random and turn it into part of your art work. In this case, we took an envelope and turned it into a house.

1st Grade- Owl Moon Landscape

After reading the book Owl Moon, we talked about landscapes, especially snow ones and how the snow reflects the sky.
On the first day we created hills by using tints
On the second day, we added trees, shadows, an owl, moon, and stars. We drew with pencil first and then painted.

Kindergarten- Trains

The students loved this project. They enjoyed cutting out rectangles to make various train shapes along with choosing a name for their train. This project went perfect with our school wide Polar Express day.

Kindergarten- Poinsettias

This was for a quick one day project right before break and the students loved it because of the metallic paint on black paper. We practiced our brushstrokes and cleaning our brushes during this project.

Kindergarten- Food Houses

We start this lesson by reading My House. It is a great book about different houses all over the world and houses are made of many different things. We talk about the word architect- a man made building.
Just to make this lesson silly and use our creativity, we design houses out of food.
