Kindergarten Penguins

We finally had a snow day! And this project as the perfect filler for the classes that are ahead of others. We began this lesson by read Pierre the Penguin (such a cute book). We this discussed how we were going to make a portrait of a penguin. A portrait can be a picture of a person or animal.
Kindergarteners created penguins using geometric shapes. This also allowed us to practice our cutting and gluing skills.

3rd Grade- Symmetrical Insects

This was the first year I did this project and I just loved how they turned out. We discussed symmetry and made a list of things that are symmetrical. Students then created their own symmetrical insect or bug. We folded a 12 x 18 piece of paper in half and drew half an insect along the fold with pencil. We traced over our pencil lines with oil pastel. We folded the paper back up and rubbed to transfer the oil pastel to the other half of the paper. We then retraced the transferred image with oil pastel to make the line darker and bolder.
The next class we water colored our insect.
Finally, the third class, we cut out our insect, glued it to black paper, and drew an interested background with oil pastels.

Children's Grove Art Contest

Columbia has great support for the fine arts. Each year, the Children's Grove committee has an art contest for students to enter. The winning piece is then transformed into a sculpture at Stephen's Lake Part. This years theme was dolphins- dolphins represent peace, friendship, and understanding. Here are the submissions that were selected for Midway. Good luck Taylor, Shelby, and Sierra.

100 Days Smarter

Ever wonder what you will look like at age 100? For the 100th day of school, 2nd graders created self portraits predicting how they will look when they are 100.
