3rd Grade- Symmetrical Insects

This was the first year I did this project and I just loved how they turned out. We discussed symmetry and made a list of things that are symmetrical. Students then created their own symmetrical insect or bug. We folded a 12 x 18 piece of paper in half and drew half an insect along the fold with pencil. We traced over our pencil lines with oil pastel. We folded the paper back up and rubbed to transfer the oil pastel to the other half of the paper. We then retraced the transferred image with oil pastel to make the line darker and bolder.
The next class we water colored our insect.
Finally, the third class, we cut out our insect, glued it to black paper, and drew an interested background with oil pastels.
