4th Grade- Positive and Negative Hearts

This lesson was a little tricky to squeeze into one class. Each student received two pieces of construction paper in contrasting colors. The decided which paper would be the background, and which one would be the foreground. On the foreground paper they drew a big geometric shape and cut it out. After that, they used pencil and drew organic shapes touching the edges. They had to cut out the organic shapes. This was a little tough because they had to cut it in one piece without tearing the paper.

Now it came time for glue. Students glued down the geometric paper to the background paper. They then had to glue all the organic pieces down, but they had to flip them to create a mirror image. This linked to what they have previously studied in math (flip, slide, rotate)
